Iron fuel for 60 Hz grids: why existing steam sets matter

Iron burns, gets heavier, and releases no CO2.

Fine iron powder burns to iron oxide and releases high-temperature heat. Green hydrogen reduces the oxide back to iron. The iron powder stores for months with little loss.

Why this matters for steam plant owners:

A 2026 KIT study (Schuler et al., Chem Circularity) finds that converting a coal plant to iron fuel centers on rebuilding the heat generator. Steam cycle, turbine and generator can in theory stay. TU Darmstadt opened its Metal Energy Hub in 2025 with a pilot line of about 1 MW.

Why 60 Hz markets should look now:

A steam turbine-generator set is built for one frequency. A 60 Hz set runs at 3,600 rpm and cannot operate in a 50 Hz grid. In the Americas, parts of Asia and the Middle East, existing 60 Hz steam sets can become the base of iron-ready capacity: dispatchable today, CO2-free tomorrow.
